In the video Living Smart interview with Patricia Gras, Dr. Raul Cuero discusses how he discovered the ability to overcome adversity and innovation through creativity. In 1948, Dr. Raul Cuero was born in Colombia into a family of seven. He did not have the luxury of being born into a first world country; he worked from the bottom up. His mother and father were unable to read and write. Cuero recognized the struggle of his uneducated parents and promised himself to never be that way. Raul kept this promise to himself by excelling in school and sports despite his racial, social, economic, and geographic quandary. He began to see his hard work pay off when he received a basketball scholarship. But this is also when he began to experience prejudice and discrimination. Those who allow the opinions of others effect their opinions of themselves are the people who will discover failure in life, but the people who take this discrimination and use it as an alleyway for creativity are the people who will find success in life. He felt that he was not limited by what society critiqued rather he used this as a way to better himself. Today, Dr. Raul Cuero is a microbiologist with nine scientific inventions to his name. You are limited to what you strive for. Dr. Raul Cuero stresses good things take time - enjoy the process. It’s not about where you come from or who you are we are all creative individuals by nature how we choose to use our creativity is in our hands.
